Light Therapy For Joint Pain

A woman is getting a laser treatment on her arm.

Light and laser therapy, also known as Photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy, is a medical treatment that involves the use of low-power lasers or light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to stimulate cellular healing and reduce inflammation. It has been studied extensively and has been shown to be effective in reducing pain and improving function in patients with conditions such as osteoarthritis and cervical osteoarthritis.

The therapy works by increasing ATP production, reducing oxidative stress, and restoring cellular respiration in damaged cells, allowing them to repair and return to healthy function. It can be administered through whole-body treatments or handheld devices, and the recommended treatment protocol may vary based on the severity and history of the condition being treated.

Many patients experience positive results, such as reduced joint pain and increased range of motion, within the first third of their treatment plan. Maintenance treatments may also be recommended to help maintain these positive effects.

TYPICAL RECOMMENDED PROTOCOL:

3-4 wholebody treatments and 2 handheld treatments per week for 4-12 weeks.

Maintenance is established based on the severity and history of the condition. We see positive results every day. Patients usually notice a positive response (increased ROM, pain relief, Increased energy for autoimmune) within the first 1/3 of their recommended treatment plan.

STUDY:

The clinical efficacy of low-power laser therapy on pain and function in cervical osteoarthritis 2001 Journal of Clinical Rheumatology

"60 patients were diagnosed with COA, clinically and radiologically. One group was treated

daily for 10 consecutive days. Measured pain (VAS), paravertebral muscle spasm, loss of lordosis, and ROM restriction before and after therapy. No statistical improvement was found in the placebo group. Increased function and ROM in the PBM group along with a drastic reduction in pain."

TESTIMONIAL:

"My activity level has increased and I can enjoy life again!"
