Light & Laser Therapy For Injuries & Surgical Recovery
Surgery does its job, but recovery is where things slow down. Pain and swelling that won't quit. Scar tissue that limits movement. Fatigue that drags on longer than anyone told you it would. And the pressure to reduce opioid pain medication as quickly as possible.
Red light and laser therapy is one of the most effective tools available for post-surgical recovery. It's non-invasive, drug-free, and works with your body's natural healing process rather than against it — with documented results that show faster tissue repair, less inflammation, and less post-operative pain.
At Advantage Therapy Solutions in Greenville, NC, patients treated with light therapy after surgery heal an average of 50% faster than they would otherwise.

Why light therapy accelerates surgical recovery
When tissue is cut, it triggers an inflammatory response — which is necessary, but can become excessive and prolonged in ways that delay recovery rather than support it. Photobiomodulation works with this process rather than suppressing it:
- Accelerates cellular repair — light energy stimulates ATP production in damaged cells, giving them the energy they need to rebuild faster
- Reduces post-operative swelling — light therapy improves lymphatic drainage and reduces the accumulation of inflammatory fluids in surgical sites
- Decreases pain — photobiomodulation reduces the concentration of pain-mediating chemicals in treated tissue, and calms sensitized nerve endings around surgical sites
- Reduces scar tissue formation — by supporting organized collagen production rather than chaotic scar tissue, light therapy can improve both the appearance of surgical scars and the underlying tissue quality
- Increases local circulation — healthy blood flow is essential to healing; light therapy consistently improves microcirculation in treated area
“My recovery has been so much faster because of ATS. I would never even consider giving light therapy up. It has been a lifesaver for me!" - Blondie Marslender

At Advantage Therapy Solutions, we go beyond traditional pain relief methods by integrating the power of advanced laser therapy. Laser therapy is a non-invasive and highly effective technique that stimulates healing at the cellular level, reducing inflammation, accelerating tissue repair, and promoting overall recovery.

When to start treatment
Earlier is better — but it's never too late.
For most surgical patients, we recommend starting light therapy within the first 1–2 weeks post-op, once your surgeon has cleared you for adjunct therapy. Starting early means catching the inflammatory phase while it's active and steering it toward faster resolution.
Patients who come in months or even years after surgery can still benefit, particularly for persistent pain, scar tissue, and restricted range of motion that hasn't fully resolved.
Frequently Asked Questions About Light Therapy For Post-Surgical Recovery
How soon after surgery can I start light therapy?
Most patients begin within 1–2 weeks of their procedure, once the surgical site is closed and stable. We ask that you check with your surgeon before starting — and we're happy to answer any questions they have about the therapy.
Will light therapy interfere with my surgical repair?
No. Light therapy works at the cellular level and does not affect hardware, implants, stitches, or surgical repairs. It does not generate heat sufficient to affect internal structures.
Can light therapy help with scar tissue from an old surgery?
Yes. We regularly treat patients for scar tissue from surgeries that happened months or years ago. Older scar tissue responds more slowly than fresh inflammation, but it does respond — particularly to concentrated laser therapy applied directly to the scar.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on the surgery and where you are in recovery. Patients in the acute post-operative phase typically see the fastest results — often meaningful improvement in pain and swelling within the first 3–5 sessions. We'll give you a realistic estimate at your first visit.
Can I use this instead of pain medication after surgery?
Light therapy can significantly reduce post-operative pain and many patients are able to reduce their reliance on pain medication as a result. We never advise stopping prescribed medication without talking to your surgeon first — but reducing or eliminating opioid use after surgery is a goal many of our post-surgical patients achieve.
Should I tell my doctor I'm getting light therapy?
Yes — and most doctors are fine with it. Light therapy is non-invasive and has no known interactions with medications, surgical hardware, or implants. That said, your surgeon knows your specific procedure and recovery timeline better than anyone, so it's worth a quick mention at your next follow-up. If your doctor has questions about what we do, we're happy to answer them.
