Red Light Therapy for Brain Fog
HEAL FASTER AND FEEL LESS PAIN

Light Therapy for Brain Fog
Brain fog isn't a diagnosis — it's a symptom, and one that most doctors don't have a good answer for. If you've been told your labs are normal while you're still struggling to think clearly, retain information, or get through a day without mental exhaustion, you're not imagining it.
Red and near-infrared light therapy works at the cellular level to support brain function, reduce neuroinflammation, and give your brain the energy it needs to operate the way it should.
At Advantage Therapy Solutions in Greenville, NC, we treat brain fog as a real physiological problem, because that's exactly what it is.

OUR PATIENTS SAY:
I started helmet treatments in February while studying over 4 hours a day for my occupational therapy board exam. After using the helmet consistently, I took the board exam—a difficult, 4-hour test—and passed! I truly feel the helmet enhanced my ability to focus during such a long and demanding exam. Before starting the treatments, and I could barely stay focused for the full duration of a test. In addition to my focus, I also noticed reduction in my anxiety. People around me have also commented on improvements in my speech and fine motor skills—two areas affected by my brain injury. It has been an encouraging experience!
How Does Light Therapy Help Brain Fog?
Brain fog usually comes down to a few things happening in the brain at once — inflammation, poor blood flow, and cells that aren't producing enough energy to keep up. Light therapy addresses all three.
The red and near-infrared wavelengths we use penetrate through the skull and are absorbed directly by brain tissue. This increases blood flow to the brain, reduces inflammation, and gives your cells the energy boost they need to function the way they should. It also supports the brain chemicals responsible for focus, mood, and mental stamina.
For patients dealing with cognitive symptoms, we often use our light therapy helmet, which delivers treatment directly to the head for targeted brain support.
Who is this treatment for?
Light therapy for brain fog is a strong option if your mental clarity issues are connected to:
- Fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome
- Thyroid conditions, hormonal changes, or perimenopause
- Post-concussion syndrome or mild traumatic brain injury — see our brain conditions page
- Chronic stress, poor sleep, or burnout
- Autoimmune conditions
- Aging-related cognitive changes
You don't need a specific diagnosis to benefit. If your thinking is slower, cloudier, or more effortful than it used to be, that's enough reason to come in.
Clear Mind. Better Sleep. Less Fatigue.
Published research has found that photobiomodulation can reduce pain scores, improve sleep quality, and decrease fatigue in fibromyalgia patients — with effects that build over a course of treatment.
Who is this treatment for?
Light therapy for fibromyalgia is worth considering if you:
- Have a fibromyalgia diagnosis and haven't found adequate relief from medication alone
- Experience widespread muscle pain, tenderness, or morning stiffness
- Struggle with fibromyalgia-related fatigue that sleep doesn't fix
- Have sensitivities to medications or want to reduce how much you're taking
- Are dealing with related symptoms like brain fog, headaches, or IBS alongside your fibromyalgia
It's also commonly effective for conditions that overlap with fibromyalgia, including nerve pain, neck and back pain, and migraines.
What a treatment looks like at ATS
1. Free consultation — We discuss when the brain fog started, what makes it better or worse, and any connected conditions or symptoms. This shapes your treatment plan.
2. Light therapy helmet and/or whole body light therapy — Our light therapy helmet delivers photobiomodulation directly to the brain and is our primary tool for cognitive and neurological symptoms. We may combine it with whole body light therapy to address systemic inflammation contributing to the fog.
3. Functional nutrition — Diet plays a major role in brain fog. Our functional nutrition services can identify and address dietary patterns, gut health issues, and nutritional deficiencies that keep the brain running below capacity.
4. Progress tracking — We check in on how you're feeling cognitively, not just physically, and adjust your protocol as clarity improves.
Frequently Asked Questions
How quickly will I notice a difference? Some patients notice improved mental clarity within the first few sessions. For others — particularly those with long COVID or chronic fatigue — it takes more time and consistent treatment. We'll give you a realistic timeline at your consultation.
Is this the same as light therapy for depression or seasonal affective disorder? No. SAD light therapy uses bright white light to regulate circadian rhythms. Photobiomodulation uses red and near-infrared wavelengths to influence cellular function in tissues — including the brain. They're different tools with different mechanisms.
Do I need a referral? No. We offer free consultations and you can schedule directly.
Does it work for age-related cognitive decline? Research into photobiomodulation and cognitive aging is ongoing and looks promising. It's not a treatment for dementia or Alzheimer's disease, but for patients experiencing normal age-related cognitive slowing, the circulatory and mitochondrial effects of light therapy can support better brain function.
