Light Therapy for Fibromyalgia

Drug-free relief for widespread pain, fatigue, and flares

Fibromyalgia can keep you from doing the activities that bring you joy. Most treatments barely touch the pain of fibromyalgia. Medications help some people some of the time. But for many fibromyalgia patients, the side effects are almost as bad as the condition itself.

Red light and laser therapy works differently. It doesn't mask pain signals — it addresses the underlying cellular dysfunction that keeps fibromyalgia patients stuck in a cycle of flares, exhaustion, and sensitivity.

Does red light therapy help fibromyalgia?

Yes. Fibromyalgia is linked to central sensitization: the nervous system becomes overloaded and starts amplifying pain signals that would otherwise be filtered out. It's also associated with mitochondrial dysfunction, meaning the cells responsible for energy production aren't working efficiently, which is why fibromyalgia fatigue is so different from ordinary tiredness.

Photobiomodulation (the clinical term for red and near-infrared light therapy) targets both of these problems directly:

Gives your cells energy to heal.

Light therapy is absorbed directly by your cells and jumpstarts ATP production - the energy production that pain and inflammation have been draining.

Turns down the inflammation.

Fibromyalgia keeps your body in a constant state of low-grade inflammatory overdrive; light therapy helps interrupt that cycle

Quiets overactive pain signals

Your nervous system in fibromyalgia is essentially stuck on high alert; repeated treatments help reset that response

Improves blood flow to sore muscles.

Poor circulation is a big reason fibromyalgia pain and stiffness linger; light therapy gets more oxygen moving to the tissue that needs it

Less Pain. Better Sleep. Less Fatigue.

Published research has found that photobiomodulation can reduce pain scores, improve sleep quality, and decrease fatigue in fibromyalgia patients — with effects that build over a course of treatment.

Who is this treatment for?

Light therapy for fibromyalgia is worth considering if you:

  • Have a fibromyalgia diagnosis and haven't found adequate relief from medication alone
  • Experience widespread muscle pain, tenderness, or morning stiffness
  • Struggle with fibromyalgia-related fatigue that sleep doesn't fix
  • Have sensitivities to medications or want to reduce how much you're taking
  • Are dealing with related symptoms like brain fog, headaches, or IBS alongside your fibromyalgia

It's also commonly effective for conditions that overlap with fibromyalgia, including nerve painneck and back pain, and migraines.

What a treatment looks like at ATS

No needles, no pills, no downtime.

1. Free consultation — We talk through your fibromyalgia history, your current symptoms, and what you've already tried. Treatment plans are built around you, not a generic protocol.

2. Whole body light therapy and/or concentrated laser therapy — Depending on your symptom pattern, we may use our whole body light therapy pod for full-body inflammation reduction, concentrated laser therapy for targeted painful areas, or both. Sessions are 10–30 minutes with no discomfort.

3. Functional nutrition support — Fibromyalgia has a strong nutritional component. Our functional nutrition services can address inflammatory diet patterns, deficiencies, and gut health issues that make fibromyalgia worse.

4. Ongoing monitoring — We track your progress and adjust as needed. Most patients begin noticing a difference within several sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions

You might be wondering...

Can light therapy cure fibromyalgia? No — and anyone who tells you otherwise isn't being straight with you. What light therapy can do is meaningfully reduce pain levels, improve energy, and decrease the frequency and severity of flares. Many of our fibromyalgia patients describe it as the first thing that's actually moved the needle.

How many treatments will I need? Fibromyalgia typically responds to a more consistent initial treatment schedule — often 2–3 sessions per week to start, then tapering as symptoms improve. We'll give you a realistic estimate at your free consultation based on your specific history.

Is this safe if I have multiple conditions or take multiple medications? Yes. Light therapy is non-invasive and has no known interactions with medications. We'll review your full health picture at your consultation to make sure the protocol is appropriate for you.

Will whole body light therapy or concentrated laser therapy work better for me? It depends on where your pain is concentrated. Patients with widespread, full-body fibromyalgia symptoms often respond well to whole body therapy. Those with specific hotspots may benefit more from concentrated laser work. Many do both. We'll make a recommendation at your first visit.

Can light therapy help fibromyalgia fatigue, not just pain? Yes. The mitochondrial effects of photobiomodulation directly address the energy production problems underlying fibromyalgia fatigue — not just the pain. Many patients report improved energy and sleep quality alongside reduced pain.
