Light Therapy for Plantar Fasciitis: Can It Help Heel Pain?

HEAL FASTER AND FEEL LESS PAIN
A white background with a few lines on it

Intro

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. It’s often aggravated by standing jobs, running, footwear, and tight calves/achilles. Conservative care usually includes stretching, load management, strengthening, orthotics, and supportive shoes.

What evidence says about light therapy

There are meta-analyses and clinical studies evaluating LLLT for plantar fasciitis. A 2019 meta-analysis reported meaningful heel pain relief after LLLT, with effects lasting for months in some cases.

Randomized trials also exist comparing laser approaches, including comparisons of low-level vs high-intensity laser therapy.

How it fits into a plantar fasciitis plan

Light therapy tends to work best when paired with:

  • calf/foot strengthening
  • plantar fascia and calf mobility
  • footwear + activity modifications

The therapy works by increasing ATP production, reducing oxidative stress, and restoring cellular respiration in damaged cells, allowing them to repair and return to healthy function. It can be administered through whole-body treatments or handheld devices, and the recommended treatment protocol may vary based on the severity and history of the condition being treated.

Laser therapy does two things really well: reduce inflammation and increase circulation. This means it is an excellent modality to use for injury recovery. On average, patients using traditional treatments plus phototherapy lasers heal twice as fast as those using traditional treatments alone.
