Laser Therapy: A Safe Alternative to Opioids and NSAIDS

With the opioid crisis reaching epidemic levels, patients and healthcare providers are looking for safer ways to manage pain.

Studies show that phototherapy promotes pain relief in three ways: inducing analgesia, reducing inflammation, and promoting injury healing.

In high doses, phototherapy induces analgesia by disrupting axonal transport in nocireceptors. In other words, the photons literally interrupt pain signals to the brain. This is temporary and reversible, however repeated treatments can lead to reduced central sensitization.

Inflammation Reduction

Phototherapy relieves oxidative stress in cells, restoring them to healthy function. Cells become clogged with nitric oxide due to aging, exposure to toxins, and injury. These clogged cells cannot take in oxygen, and consequently cannot produce ATP. Photons displace nitric oxide from the mitochondria, allowing oxygen to enter the cell, bind with glucose, and produce ATP. A chain reaction of metabolic effects leads to a reduction in inflammatory markers including prostaglandin E2, interleukin 1β and tumour necrosis factor α.

Injury Healing

Phototherapy promotes injury healing in three ways: restoring mitochondrial health (as discussed above), increasing blood flow to the lymphatic system, and stimulating stem cell proliferation. You can read more about this in our post about the Whole Body Pod.

Opioids and NSAIDS are commonly prescribed for post-surgical pain. What if there was another answer?

Phototherapy To Postpone or Avoid Surgery

In one randomized, placebo controlled study, phototherapy was so effective that patients were able to avoid knee replacement surgery. You can read about that HERE.

Phototherapy For Postoperative Pain

Several studies show that phototherapy is effective in treating postoperative pain. In fact, in many cases it helped control pain AND patients healed faster! There is strong evidence that phototherapy has beneficial effects for patients after bariatric surgery, palatal surgery, sternotomy, and even dental surgery.

Can Phototherapy Help With Chronic Pain?

YES! Studies support the use of phototherapy for neuropathic pain, musculoskeletal pain, fibromyalgia, and chronic lower back pain, just to name a few!
