A February 2018 study found that adding phototherapy to an exercise regimen is associated with increased weight loss in obese women.
Researchers studied 49 women with a BMI of between 30 and 40. One group performed an exercise regimen and received post exercise phototherapy 3 times a week for four weeks. The control group performed the same exercise regimen and received a sham treatment.
Researchers found that both groups saw improvements in body mass, BMI, body fat mass, lean mass, visceral fat, waist circumference, insulin, HOMA-IR, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, and ANP. However, they found a higher magnitude change in the fat mass, insulin, HOMA-IR, and FGF-21 variables in the phototherapy group. The phototherapy group was the only group to see reduction in interleukin-6 (an inflammatory cytokine) and an increase in WNT5 signaling (associated with fat browning). WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR ME?
Will phototherapy alone help you lose weight so you can avoid the gym? No. But paired with an exercise regimen, it can enhance your weight loss results, reduce inflammatory markers, and increase your brown fat.
