Laser and LED therapy for Nerve Pain

Updated: Sep 11, 2019

Photobiomodulation therapy is a new hot topic in the field of peripheral nerve regeneration.

How does shining a laser on a nerve help it heal? Great question! Let's explore the science:

AXONAL HEALTH - Axons are nerve fibers. Their job is to send signals throughout the body. Just like other parts of the body, axons rely on blood supply to keep them healthy and functioning properly.

MYELIN SHEATH HEALTH - The myelin sheath is a fatty coating that protects the nerve fibers. Think of it as insulation around an electrical wire. When the myelin sheath doesn't get adequate blood supply it deteriorates. This can slow and even stop nerve signals.

Phototherapy has been shown to increase microcirculation and promote angiogenesis (creating new blood vessels out of existing ones). By increasing blood supply to the axon and myelin sheath, photobiomodulation therapy can accelerate nerve regenerative processes.

APPLYING THE SCIENCE

Fibromyalgia Study (SOURCE)

"After LLLT or sham treatment, the number of tender points was significantly reduced in both groups. However, all other fibromyalgia symptoms showed significant improvements after LLLT compared to placebo. LLLT provided relief from fibromyalgia symptoms in patients."

Neuropathy Study (SOURCE)

"Therefore, MIRE appears to be associated with significant clinical improvement in foot sensation and, simultaneously, a reduction in neuropathic pain in a large cohort of primarily Medicare aged, community-dwelling patients, initially diagnosed with PN. The quality of life associated with these two outcomes cannot be underappreciated."

Amputee Study (SOURCE)

"Patients underwent nine sessions of low-intensity laser therapy (LILT) to the stump - this is a new treatment that has been used to treat other pain disorders. All patients reported a decrease in the intensity of their pain and increased ability to perform daily living activities during a 4-month follow-up."

Nerve Regeneration Rat Study (SOURCE)

"It was observed that PBMT was able to accelerate the process of nerve regeneration presenting an increase in the number of myelinated fibers starting at 14 days of treatment for groups CD and GD, and at 21 days they were similar to PC. It was observed a better lamellar organization of myelin sheath at 7 days for GD and at 14 days for CD, similar to PC. Both GD and CD presented significant differences compared to NC and PC for thickness of the myelin sheath, outer perimeter, internal area, and number of myelin fibers."

Peripheral Nerve Study (SOURCE)

"It was observed that PBMT was able to accelerate the process of nerve regeneration, presenting an increase in the number of myelinated fibers and a better lamellar organization of myelin sheath, besides improvement of electrophysiological function, immunoreactivity, high functionality rate, decrease of inflammation, pain, and the facilitation of neural regeneration, release of growth factors, increase of vascular network and collagen. It was concluded that PBMT has beneficial effects on the recovery of nerve lesions, especially when related to a faster regeneration and functional improvement..."

NERVE PAIN TESTIMONIALS:

"Immediate positive changes after first visit. Pain and numbness reduction noticed and continues to abate."

---Bill

"I have been dealing with low back issues (herniated disc and sciatica) for months now. I was skeptical at first, I will not deny. But, my pain is significantly better after my visits as well as my overall mood."

---Ashli

"Ashlyn is no longer on any medication and she looks forward to her days at Advantage Therapy Solutions. It has increased her energy level, decreased her leg and back pain and she is doing amazingly well at this point."
