CBD Products...how do they work?

It seems like every health-related business in Greenville, NC is selling CBD products now. Why all the hype? Is this just another health fad, or are we just now discovering the health benefits of CBD?

At Advantage Therapy Solutions we are passionate about evidence-based scientific facts rather than hype. Let's look at the science about CBD:

What is CBD?

CBD stands for Cannabidiol, a compound found naturally in the flower of the hemp plant. CBD is just one of 113 cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. It non-psychoactive, which means it won't get you "high". FUN FACT: Your body makes its own cannabinoids, but also responds to external cannabinoids like CBD. CBD works by binding with cannabinoid receptors in the Endocannabinoid System.

What is the Endocannabinoid System?

The Endocannabinoid System is a network of cannabinoid receptors located throughout the body. There are many receptors that interact with CBD, but the ones we know the most about are CB1 and CB2.

CB1 receptors regulate many physiological processes – sleep, memory, emotional responses, mood, appetite, temperature, among others. It can even regulate the sensation of pain.

CB2 receptors produce widespread anti-inflammatory effects since they are mostly located in the immune cells. SOURCE

Is it legal?

CBD extracted from hemp is a federally lawful substance due to section 10113 of the Agricultural Improvement Act of 2018 removing cannabinoids and extracts of hemp under 0.3% total THC from the Controlled Substances Act. Cannabidiol is not scheduled under any United Nations drug control treaties and in 2018 the World Health Organization recommended that it remain unscheduled. SOURCE

Is it safe?

Yes. An average dose of CBD is anywhere from 10-100 mg a day. It would take about 18,000 mg of CBD administered in a very short amount of time to be toxic to humans. SOURCE In a study on epilepsy patients, no signs of “toxicity or serious side effects” were detected from the use of CBD after daily 200-300 mg doses for 135 days. Neurological and physical examinations were conducted at weekly intervals, as were blood and urine analyses, EKG tests, and EEG studies – all of which came back standard. In many studies, CBD was found to not only be safe, but to have fewer side effects than other pharmaceuticals treating the same conditions. SOURCE
